To protect a wood bench for the outside element, you will need to apply a surface finish to them to help protect the hardwood. You can use coloring or stain to safeguard the timber. This can help deter the solid wood from becoming weathered and decaying to the idea it falls apart and becomes unsafe for use.

Before painting or staining a bench, the surface should be prepared. Work with a fine-grain sandpaper to sand the top of bench. The purpose of this is to expose fresh hardwood so that the bench can simply allow the new stain or color that you apply.

After sanding, you’ll need to clean off of the sawdust from the top. This can be done with a clean dried out soft rag to eliminate the dust. You might use a string blower to eliminate the dust too.
